The Importance of the English Language in Today's World...

Nowadays, more and more people are dedicating time to studying English as a second language. Many countries include English in their school syllabus and children are starting to learn English at a younger and younger age. But what is the true value of learning English?

Whether you are looking for a new job or planning to travel the world, studying English can help you progress in life both personally and professionally. You can compete in the global job market, increase your career skills and start to meet people around the world.

However, do you know why learning English is so important?

Why did English become important?

It’s easy to see just how important English is around the world. Many international businesses conduct meetings in English, universities teach courses in English and, around the world, tourists and travellers use English as a common language.

But how did English become so important? Well, it all goes back to the British Empire, which at its peak covered 25% of the earth’s surface. During colonial times, British rulers often obliged the people in those countries to speak English rather than their native language. Although the origins of English as a global language has a complicated past, the language has left an important mark on media, trade and business. If you’re still not sure about whether to learn the language, then check out the reasons below.

Importance of English

♡English as an International Language...

Today’s society is more and more involved in the study of English. The interest in the learning of this language has increased so much that is now considered by many an international language. English has a wide territorial reach and its domination at global scale is now undeniable. The language plays an important role as a language of diplomacy and international communications, business, tourism, education, science, computer technology, media and Internet. It is a fact that English is frequently used in official documents of many international organizations, treaties, contracts and summits being exclusively used in international shipping business. This paper intends to clarify some important aspects regarding the development of English as an international language, the path taken to reach global status and the long-term effects the spread of this language has over countries around the world. Starting from the assumption that English is an international language, this paper is based on defining the essential characteristics of an international language, analyzes why English has developed as one and underlines some important aspects which favor or impede the spread of this language. It is also discussed the way in which English reached such high status and what effects, negative or positive, this status holds. It opens with the definition of the term ‘international language’ and subjects English to an analysis in two direction: from the perspective of the number of users and their recognition as English-speakers and secondly, by summarizing the features of an international language having English as model. The second part of this paper opens a discussion about the spread of English making a categorization of the reasons which lead to its spread and what negative effects can this have over other languages. Next, the third and final part of the paper is dedicated to the wheel which makes this machine work, the users of the language. They are the key to English’s expansion worldwide and another feature that defines English as international language: the bilingual users. It is discussed the growing number of bilingual users of English, what characterizes them as being bilingual and what motivates them to use English as a second language. The last part of the paper also examines the meanings of the term ‘native speaker’, describing types of bilingual users and how they make use of the language. If today, English-speaking countries, taken together have about 400 million...

English as an official language of administration...

Having English as our official language simply means that for the government to act officially, or legally, it must communicate in English. It means the language of record is the English language, and that no one has a right to demand government services in any other language.

Official English would also reinforce America’s historic message to new immigrants  that we expect them to learn English as the first step in their assimilation and that we are committed to ensuring that all Americans share in the economic, social and political benefits of having a common language.

English as a language of Court...

Most recently, several countries on the European continent have admitted, or are discussing to admit, English as an optional court language. This article provides some information about the background of these recent initiatives, projects and reforms, clarifies the idea on which they are based and explores the purposes they pursue. It then identifies in a theoretical way the various possible degrees of admitting English as a court language and the surrounding questions of practical implementation. These general issues are followed by a presentation of the initiatives, projects and reforms in France, Switzerland and Germany. Not surprisingly, the idea of admitting English as a court language has not only found support, but has also been criticised in legal academia and beyond. Therefore, the article then attempts to give a structured overview of the debate, followed by some own thoughts on the arguments which are being put forward. It concludes with an appeal not to restrict the arguments in favour of admitting English as a court language to merely economic aspects, but also to give due weight to the fact that admitting English may facilitate access to justice and may result in bringing back cases to the public justice system.

English as a language of international trade & industry...

Globalization and free trade have drastically changed the dynamics of business and industry in the world we live in Today. Companies set u operations across continents and borders. It's so longer such a novelty for a large multinational company to set up headquarters in Singapore, manufacturing operations in shanghai and jakarta, and the regional offices in Sydney, Atlanta and Paris. Less restrictions in traffics and taxes are opening up opportunities in emerging countries with ready markets and available talent resources.

One of the important aspects of becoming a globally competitive professional is language skills. In most business transactions and correspondence today, English is the most widely used language across the globe, even though other major languages such as Spanish and Chinese are also becoming more important. Because of the widespread acceptance of English in professional, academic and financial circles as the language of choice, any professional who wishes to keep up with the times and remain globally competitive must invest in learning and improving English skills, both written and spoken.

English in our social life...

Language is basically a system of communication where sound or signs convey objects, actions and ideas. The history of language dates back to many thousands of years. Language is primarily spoken not written. But the development of the writing medium and later the printing system went a long way is the dissipation of knowledge and without which humans would have remained in the dark about the ways of life and the thought processes of their ancestors. Language is the key to human lives. They can eliminate misunderstanding by using it as an instrument to transfer communication among people. Malinowski suggests, language is "the necessary means of communion; it is the one indispensable instrument for creating the ties of the moment without which unified social action is impossible." Language can thus be said to be at the core of humanity

Language is an extraordinary gift of God. It is part of what makes man fully human. In fact, Aristotle says man is a rational animal and that what sets him apart, what raises him above the animals, is that he has the ability to reason, and it is very clear that he cannot reason without language. "Aristotle was convinced, however, that meaning was no less an integral part of language than the sounds which bear the meaning and that language depends no less on the rational powers of man by which meanings are constructed than on the physiological organs by which sounds are formed." Language is necessary in order for man to be a rational creature.

Language is the main resource which has been gifted to all humans. Human beings have broken the code in this unique and complicated diverse world that they live in. Language diversity contributes to the very existence of man. It clearly demonstrates the will and perseverance for survival that is continuously changing in varied conditions. The loss of any language brings a potential threat to the existence of human beings as a collective.

English as a window on the modern world...

English is very important in this modern world. Apart from our mother tongue we need to have a common language which makes us able to communicate with other part of the world. English is the common language which is known to most of the people in the world. It is very important to have good English because an effective communication can reach people better. English words used must be simple so that it can be reached to people easily as well as easily understood by everyone. Nowadays English is being taught to children at primary level itself. Students are strictly made to speak in English when they are in school premises and some modern missionaries schools also punish students with a fine (penalty) - this helps in building a good communication as well as body language.

English can be improved by constant usage, by watching films, reading books with high level Grammar, playing games and trying to use new words. English can be improved by practice. As we know, practice makes the man perfect as well as using good pronunciation and grammar. Most of the jobs in today world are based on English such as IT sector, business field, call Centro jobs and teaching job, etc. So students aspiring for good jobs need to stress upon their English and usage of it because their job depends on this simple structure. English is quite easy in comparison with other languages. Basic English one can learn easily and effortlessly. Mostly people can learn English easily if they try to mater some rules and regulations. Unlike many languages, English does not have a complicated structure and except for a few areas of Grammar, it is quite simple.

English is mainly divided into two accents - US and British. US accent is very slow compared to British accent. Most people of the world follow British accent and only some people follow American accent. In the modern world English is highly useful to have business relations as well as social network with friends and family. A better communicator can communicate effectively and this reaches people very well and chance of misunderstanding is quite less . People can be influenced with your thoughts and ideas as well as they can connect to them without much complications in understanding.

English as a link language...

English has become a link language in the real sense of the term. In India it's slowly becoming the language of communication for the classes and the masses in various corporate offices, MNCs, colleges, schools etc. Slowly but surely people have started to get the hang of it. Spoken English classes are booming and mushrooming in every nook and corner of India. Thanks to the satellite TV and internet revolution more and more people are getting easy access to the once foreign tongue; now Indians are getting to watch the Hollywood blockbusters in the comfort of their drawing rooms and getting to know the culture of the west through soaps etc. This globalization and liberalization has boosted in the overall development of the country. English has become part of life for many Indians, and many can speak fluently and idiomatically like native speakers. For the younger generation it has become the passport to success and prosperity. Over the years the BBC and the British Council have done a yeoman service in spreading and taking the language to the common man. I personally feel indebted to these institutions who have opened vistas of knowledge and learning.

English as a library language...

With the American population becoming ever diverse, many second language learners find themselves faced with the daunting task of identifying the right methods. For individuals whose primary language is English, it is often easy to pick up a second language through middle school, high school and beyond. Yet, those who travel to America to improve their lives often find it almost impossible to integrate into society, as resources are not as abundant to them as they are to native-born Americans. Gratefully, there are several options available; in this case, the local library. A membership at the local library will yield a world of opportunities for second language learners and English language learners

Language development tends to skyrocket at the age of 3 in many cultures, and peters out by the age of 18. While this is good news for children and young adults, those that hope to learn a second language beyond this tend to struggle for the most part. There is the factor of brain elasticity to consider, which is based on an individual level. Another factor that should be considered when addressing learning a second language is Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences.

The traditional concept of an IQ has begun to be seen as an outdated form of measuring intelligence. Gardner proposed that there are at least eight different types of intelligence and that any given individual could possess a mix of the eight. Most individuals have at least two dominant types of intelligence, such as Kinesthetic/Logical or Musical/Verbal. What this means is that everyone learns differently, depending on the particular type of intelligence they possess. With this in mind, individuals who are learning English language will require the wide array of resources that the local library will possess

English in our educational system...

English language education must be a focus at the primary level, junior secondary level and senior secondary level of all schools. In all schools, students must be given the opportunity, regardless of socio-economic and /or regional differences, to acquire a level of English proficiency that aids them in higher education and career advancement.

One of the main problems with the focus on the provision of English education for students, in general, is that this approach fails to consider how there is unequal access to English education across the country. It is the access to English education that supplements the provision of English education and so it cannot be neglected whilst developing the provision of English language skills of students.

Access to English education across the country is partly determined by the availability of teachers who are well trained in teaching English to students. The allocation of teachers to different schools determines access to English learning skills for students across the country. Disadvantaged schools or schools in extremely rural areas of the country require good English teachers and this must be taken into account during the transfers of teachers.
